2007-08 Governor Dick Hyer

These Email Reports are submitted periodically by District Governor Dick Hyer to document his activities.

(The reports are in chronological order with the newest report at the bottom of the page.)

 First Report - June 2007

Dear Rotarian Friends,

This is my first effort at district-wide communication.  I hope you will be informed by the schedule of activities, club visits and special events.  This weekly communication will come to you beginning in July 2007.  My visits next week will take me to Kings Bay, Brunswick, and Camden County Rotary Clubs.  I look forward to the opportunity to interact with the membership of each of these clubs.

The Governor's Newsletter will be published in electronic format only and should be in your hands by the second Rotary meeting in each month.  Club Presidents, please be sure to distribute the newsletter to your membership.
Please note the Important Dates section and the Schedule of Club Visits in the July issue of the Governor's Newsletter.

You will be receiving information about the Family of Rotary gathering in Warm Springs very soon.  The activities will occur on Saturday, August 11, 2007.  The District Seminar will be held in Vidalia at the Technical College on Saturday, August 4.  Registration information is being disseminated by District Governor Elect Kenan Kern who will chair the meeting.  Please note these dates since there had to be a change to accommodate the RI Family of Rotary Activities.  Also, please mark your calendars for Saturday, October 27 when there will be a special membership seminar and a workshop for club secretaries.  North Carolina Past District Governor Mike Thacker will be on hand at the Heart of Georgia Technical College to demonstrate the latest electronic technology for record-keeping.  Assistant Governors Lloyd Horadan and Paula Goodnow will lead the membership workshop.

You are receiving this communication early due to the Independence Day Holiday.  I wish you all a safe and happy Independence Day and hope to see you in Vidalia for the District Seminar on August 4 and then in Warm Springs
the next Saturday, August 11.

I am honored to be serving as Governor for District 6920 for 2007-2008.  Please be assured that I will make every effort to communicate with you and to respond to your requests.

Yours for Better Rotary Service,
Richard E. Hyer, Jr.

Dear Rotary Friends,

This has been an exciting week.  My official visits went well and I learned a good deal about great projects in Camden County, Kings Bay, and Brunswick.  Thanks for the great hospitality!  Thanks especially to Debbie and Leon Cochran in St. Mary’s who opened their beautiful home to us.  Assistant Governor Paula Goodnow was especially helpful in getting us from place to place on time.  Magnolia Manor in Kings Bay is a great meeting place and the food at Christie’s in Downtown Brunswick is outstanding.  Congratulations to longtime Rotarian Nat Smith on his Paul Harris award from the Kings Bay Club!  There are a good number of Literacy Projects in these clubs.  July is Literacy Month so these clubs are on target!  The public-private partnership between the schools and Rotary is good for business, industry, and education.  In the Camden County Club we enjoyed having breakfast with President Chris Daniel and Past District Governor Bill Blankenship.  The two Camden County Clubs presented Bill and me with a wonderful bronze plaque which will be permanently displayed at the St. Mary’s Public Library with a replica at the Georgia Academy for the Blind.  The Four-Way Test is completed in bronze letters and in braille.  Words cannot express my appreciation for this memento.  Bill has passed on the “Home of the District Governor” banner which will reside with the Macon Rotary Club for the remainder of the year.  Next week I travel to Perry, Centerville, Downtown Macon, and Gray in Jones County.  It is close to home so I am familiar with the activities of these organizations.

Presidents, please let me remind you to appoint a Medical Equipment Transport Service (METS) representative from your club.  This is important to the future of an outstanding district project.  You will enjoy your association with METS Director Patti Victor who has great long term plans to expand the program.  The deadline for naming your representative is July 20.  Thanks for your support.

The “Say Goodbye to Polio” activity in Warm Springs promises to be a big event.  RI President Wilf Wilkinson and Governor Sonny Perdue will be the primary speakers.  There is an informative article on polio in the July issue of the Governor’s Newsletter and in the latest issue of Rotarian Magazine.  On that same topic, please be sure at least one copy of the District 6920 Newsletter gets on each table at your next club meeting.  Every effort has been made to make the newsletter informative and it was emailed to many Rotarians.  The remaining members depend on the President to distribute.  You may wish to assign this duty to the Club Secretary since email copies go to Presidents, Secretaries, and Treasurers.  This weekly communication also goes to Assistant Governors, District Committee Chairs, and the College of Governors.

I hope to see you on August 4 at the Southeastern Technical College in Vidalia for District Seminar.  District Governor Elect Kenan Kern has planned an informative meeting on The Rotary Foundation.  Presidents, Rotary Foundation Chairs, Presidents Elect, and members of the board of directors should attend.  Thanks for all you do to promote Rotary activities.  Please remember, club presidents are the most important persons in the Rotary organization!

Yours for Better Rotary Service,

            District 6920 Governor 2007-2008

Dear Presidents,

This has been a rewarding week!  The clubs are providing outstanding service and it has been a pleasure to work with the presidents and officers.  I am on my way to the Valdosta area next week.  Assistant Governor Charles Green is our host.

One recommendation for improvement in each organization has been to send the club’s contribution to The Rotary Foundation each quarter.  Some clubs are waiting until it is convenient, and the contribution isn’t counted timely.  Financial resources allow for great foundation activities.  Thanks to President Joy Hurst and Centerville Rotarians for their contribution of 2000 heath care items to METS.  They are setting the standard!

Let me jump ahead.  August is Membership Month.  This may be the most important month of the year in RI President Wilf’s calendar.  There are about 3900 Rotarians in District 6920 and hopefully that will increase to 4300 by next June.  Recruitment is important but also pay attention to retention.  As the United States Marines would say, “We need a few good men. . . and women!”  Several leadership Rotarians are attending the Membership Seminars in Nashville and Fort Lauderdale.  Mark October 27 for the District 6920 Membership Workshop in Dublin.  I hope to see you at the District Seminar on Saturday, August 4 in Vidalia and in Warm Springs on Saturday, August 11 for the “Say Goodbye to Polio” event.

Thanks to all the Assistant Governors for making my visits to clubs easy.  We hope AG Les Arent will return to good health soon, he’s had quite a battle with a broken ankle.  Past District Governor Dallas Simon is doing well after a brief, but serious illness.

The District Governor is emphasizing membership, EREY, the placement of students with disabilities in employment, and public relations.  Please address these goals at regular meetings and each month with the club’s directors.  We want the district leadership “on the same page” in our efforts to make District 6920 better.

FYI, President Wilf is in Atlanta this Friday to accept a check for $100,000 from the Decatur Rotary Club.  There is a reception tonight at the Decatur Courthouse.  Congratulations to our Rotarian neighbors to the north for their charitable “Rotary Shares” spirit.

Marsha joins me in expressing our appreciation for your warm hospitality, recognition, and thoughtfulness.  Rotary really does share . . . Share Rotary!  Did you share the DG Newsletter for July?

Yours for Better Rotary Service,

Dear Presidents,

Marsha and I spent a very enjoyable week in Valdosta and in the home of Assistant Governor Charles Green.  We had the privilege to visit three Rotary clubs and to learn of the many achievements on behalf of Rotary that are being made in the Lowndes County community.  The Valdosta Sunrise Rotary Club is 100% sustaining members.  They are a model for financial giving in District 6920.  The literacy projects in the public schools are outstanding.  President James Dominey of the Valdosta Rotary Club plans to honor law enforcement personnel for their service to the community.  President Bob Harrison of the Valdosta North Rotary Club has committed his members to EREY!  We enjoyed meeting wonderful Rotarians and learning first hand about “Service Above Self”.  I look forward to returning to this area of the district for the Law Enforcement Luncheon, the silent auction, and the Bar B Q which will be celebrated by all three clubs prior to a Valdosta State University football game.  The three clubs will meet together in early August to host United States Senator Saxby Chambliss.

I also had the pleasure to meet with President Jim Kimmon and the Eastman Rotary Club.  Dr. Saul Rubin was a charter member of the Eastman Club in 1938 and greeted me after almost seventy years as a Rotarian.  The Eastman Club produces an annual work plan with pictures of directors, officers, and committee members and their job descriptions.  They are off to a fast start.

The Rotary Foundation Seminar in Vidalia is just around the corner.  Please be sure to send representatives from your club.  Next week I will be in Ocilla, Tifton, and Douglas.  Assistant Governor Bertha Daniels will be our hostess.  Please register for the Family of Rotary activities at the Roosevelt Rehabilitation Center in Warm Springs on August 11.  President Wilf will no doubt recognize District 6920 as being one of the most service oriented and giving group of Rotarians in Georgia and the United States.  Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue will be present to accept the dedication of the Smithsonian Institute’s exhibit on polio.  This $300,000 exhibit will be permanently housed at the Roosevelt Rehabilitation Center.  This is an informal occasion, so bring your picnic and family members and enjoy the beautiful tourist town of Warm Springs.

There is currently a tie among three Assistant Governors for who is the best!  Paula Goodnow, Harold Weathers, and Charles Green have been wonderful liaisons during my first three weeks as District Governor.  The DG is certainly not the most important individual in Rotary efforts, but these three leaders and club presidents have made Marsha and I feel very good about the quality of District 6920.  I have confirmed that the President’s leadership makes all the difference in how effective a club is at every level.

I hope you enjoy the new issue of the Rotarian Magazine.  Please go to the RI website and learn more about the Warm Springs event.

Yours for Better Rotary Service,

Dear Rotarian Friends,

This has been a good week in South Georgia which will end on Saturday with The Rotary Foundation Seminar in Vidalia.  I visited the Ocilla Rotary Club last Monday and enjoyed my time with President Wesley Paulk and an enthusiastic group of members.  They are rebuilding and hope to increase their membership to 30 during the year.  They have good ideas for service projects and hope to join forces with the Rotary clubs in Douglas, Fitzgerald, and Tifton.  Past District Governor Leon Benefield was on hand in Ocilla and for both club visits in Tifton.  Marsha and I had a nice dinner with representatives of the Tifton Rotary clubs on Tuesday night and we were able to learn a lot about Rotary activities in Tift County.  Assistant Governor Bertha Daniel was our hostess and she was assisted by Caroline and Leon Benefield.  Rotary has strong presence in Tifton and there are a lot of service projects in the community.  I want to thank Lawton Bassett for his leadership and for making us feel welcome at the Tifton Rotary Club meeting on Wednesday.  Lawton is a local banker who has put a lot of effort into Rotary leadership. A special occasion with the Tifton Rotary Club was to meet Mr. Joe Riddle who is a charter member of that club and has been a Rotarian for over 50 years.  He was a bombardier pilot in World War II and was instrumental in providing the freedom that all of us in America enjoy today.

On Wednesday night, we ate dinner in Douglas with President Matt Greer and Past President Jeff Kight and Assistant Governor Paul Elliott.  It was a fun, informal occasion and we enjoyed the opportunity to relax and learn about the many activities in the Douglas community.

On Thursday, I had an occasion to renew my acquaintance with former AG Dr. Jim Cottingham and old friend Judge Bob Preston.  Both of these individuals were very hospitable.  The Douglas Rotary Club means a lot to people in that community and you will remember that the RYLA program takes place at South Georgia College in Douglas.  Dr. Charles Johnson of the South Georgia College faculty was on hand to greet us.  We had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Moody, who is the last charter member of the Douglas Rotary Club where he has attended for 61 years.

I look forward to your participation in the dedication of the Smithsonian Institute’s exhibit on polio at the Roosevelt Rehabilitation Center in Warm Springs on Saturday, August 11.  It promises to be a historic event.  I learned today that RI President Wilf Wilkinson will have a representative to be named as he will not be able to attend.  Lt. Governor Casey Cagle will be the ranking Georgia official.

District 6920 is in good hands in the first fifteen clubs I have visited.  Next week I am on to Metter and Savannah.

Dear Rotarian Friends,

First, let me bring you up to date on several business items.  The Group Study Exchange (GSE) will take place in April and May, 2008.  The incoming French group will be in Georgia in April and the outgoing team will visit the South of France in May.  The GSE is available only to non-Rotarians ages 25-40.  We are also recruiting a Rotarian group leader.  The GSE eligibility and application are available on the District 6920 website.  This is an absolutely wonderful opportunity to be an ambassador for the United States and to host foreign visitors in your home so as to create ambassadors for the United States from France.  Gordon Matthews is serving as Chair for the District 6920 GSE.

There is a $250 credit available toward a Paul Harris Award from the district.  This was made possible by the raffle profit earned by Past District Governor Bill Blankenship.  It is on a first come-first served basis, so apply immediately.

Very soon you will receive a communication from District Simplified Grants (DSG) Chair Jean Iaderosa.  Each club is eligible to submit a competitive grant prior to the deadline on October 1, 2007.  The application will be attached to the email communication or you may get a copy off the District website.  The DSG winners will be announced December 3, 2007.  Please remember that this is a competitive grant and is based on the criteria attached to the 2007 grant application form.  Thanks to Jean Iaderosa for serving as District Simplified Grants Chair.

Rotary is alive and well in District 6920!  I met with President Brian Tootle and the Metter Rotary Club last Tuesday.  They are an active group and we enjoyed their hospitality.  The Hyatt Hotel was the setting in Savannah for the Savannah West club meeting.  This organization has distinguished itself with its giving to The Rotary Foundation.  I met GRSP student Henrik Lund from Norway who will attend Armstrong State University.  He is a very lucky young man to have the support of the Savannah East and West Rotary family.  This is my second occasion this year to enjoy the fellowship of Savannah West.  President Bill Broker and Past District Governor Lyn Hadwin made Marsha and me feel very comfortable at the Savannah Sunrise meeting.  Savannah Sunrise made a contribution to GSRP in our honor which I appreciate very much.  I was privileged to present a Wil Watt Fellow to Past President Maureen Horvath.  The Savannah Sunrise Rotary Club is a growing organization and important in the Chatham County community.  Thanks to Assistant Governor Jeff Kublin for his hospitality and nice introductions.

District Governor Elect Kenan Kern arranged a meeting with Grants Chair Bob Ashley and several members of the Skidaway Island Rotary Club.  They will be applying for a matching grant on literacy with a club in San Juan, Puerto Rico.  Rotarian Wells Hood is the champion for that activity.

On Friday, I enjoyed visiting with the membership of the Savannah East club.  Past District Governor Bruce Montgomery and GSE Chair Gordon Matthews are members of this club.  GRSP Vice Chair Jim Drake also attended.  All of the Rotarians in the clubs I visited this week should receive a round of applause for their membership drives, Foundation giving, and community activities.

We also participated in the dedication of the Smithsonian Institute’s exhibit on polio at the Roosevelt Rehabilitation Center in Warm Springs.  It was a historical event and there were a large number of proud Rotarians present.  I hope that I represented District 6920 in an effective manner.

I return to Savannah on Monday to be with the Savannah Downtown Rotary Club and Assistant Governor Bruce Peyton.  Bruce has been instrumental in arranging our trips to Chatham County.  I go on to Waycross on Tuesday and then have several days off.

Thanks to all of you who provide Rotary leadership in the district, I continue to be amazed at the many good works provided in the district’s communities.  Also, thanks for reading what I intended to be a much shorter communication.

Yours for Better Rotary Service,

Dear Rotarian Friends,

Let me focus for a moment on the Group Study Exchange.  You know that Gordon Matthews of the Savannah East Rotary Club is the chair.  Gordon is currently looking for a Rotarian leader for the four-week trip next April 8, 2008 to the South of France.  If anyone is interested, please send contact information to District Administrative Assistant Paula Goodnow at paulagoodnow@hotmail.com.  If you know of quality individuals who are not Rotarians, ages 25-40, please encourage them to make application to go as a member of the GSE team to the South of France in April, 2008.

Club Presidents . . . in order to facilitate the entire Group Study Exchange process, please name a liaison in your club with Gordon Matthews.  This name should be sent to Paula Goodnow before August 28, 2007.  The task will not be difficult or time-consuming and this will allow Gordon to communicate effectively across the district.  Paula will coordinate your information directly with Gordon.  We hope to have a leader very soon and to conduct interviews for applicants in November and begin the education process for the trip in January, 2008.  This is a unique, wonderful opportunity to invest in young people to serve as ambassadors for Rotary in France.  There will also be host family opportunities which will be rewarding.  My thanks go to Gordon Matthews for coordinating this important District 6920 and Rotary International activity.

We have enjoyed a shorter Rotary week with visits to the Rotary Clubs of Savannah and Waycross.  We appreciate the hospitality of the Rotary Club of Savannah and I enjoyed reviewing the club plan and Rotary International goals with the board.  We especially thank President Rob Gibson for his hospitality.  The Rotary Club of Savannah is the largest in the district with 246 members.  They accomplished a well drilling project in Afghanistan last year while one of their members was on active duty with the military.  The Rotary Club of Savannah is also the oldest club in the district, having been founded early in 1914.  Thanks to Beth and Kenan Kern for hosting us in their beautiful and inviting home.  Also thanks to Assistant governor Bruce Peyton who introduced me at the Savannah East Club and the Rotary Club of Savannah.

Waycross President James Willis was our host last Tuesday.  Assistant Governor Paul Elliott came from Douglas and gave a nice introduction.  Paul has been supportive and I thank him for his attention to the District Governor.  The Waycross Rotary Club has a little over twenty sustaining members and they have promised to increase their Foundation giving this year.  We are hoping they will become an EREY club.  The Waycross club provides scholarships to the technical college and Waycross College.  They have given many other donations to organizations who cater to young people.  There is strong fellowship among the members and I enjoyed interacting with the group.  We wish President James a great Rotary year!

We are in Augusta next week and Assistant Governor Joan Puryear will be our hostess.  Joan has demonstrated her leadership with the Rotary Council in the Augusta area.  We end next week by attending the Georgia Rotary Student Program Conclave where we join the other two District Governors.  It will be an exciting weekend to host the students and to interact with the GRSP leadership from throughout the state.

Dear Rotarian Friends,

District Grants Chair Jean Iaderosa has been in touch with you this week concerning grant proposals.  There is $25,000 available on a competitive basis.  Please read carefully the criteria for receiving a grant.  If you need any technical assistance, Jean or Bob Ashley is available to assist you.  Please take advantage of this great opportunity.

Group Study Exchange Chair Gordon Matthews is still recruiting a Rotarian to lead the GSE team to the South of France next May.  If you or a fellow Rotarian would like to experience this unique opportunity, please contact Gordon.  We hope to make a selection of the outbound team leader by mid-September.  Gordon is also recruiting non-Rotarians ages 25-40 to join the outbound team as ambassadors for our district.

Marsha and I enjoyed a wonderful dinner with August Rotary Club President Jerry Woods and his wife, Dr. Debbie Bates, in their beautiful home last Sunday evening.  We stayed with Past District Governor Jim and Assistant Governor Joan Puryear.  They were wonderful hosts and we appreciate their warm hospitality.  I made an official visit to the Augusta Rotary Club on Monday and was pleased to know about their contributions to the community.  Assistant Governor Joan provided a very nice introduction and I appreciate her efficient organization of our visits.  The Augusta South members hosted us for dinner on Monday night and we learned about the club activities from President Jeanette Rasche.  They are active with the Augusta West Club in hosting the Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP) Conclave this weekend.  Joan Puryear is a member of the Augusta South club and they are a supportive organization as well as exemplifying “Service Above Self”.

On Wednesday, we traveled to Louisville and met with Jefferson County President Wendell Stephens and Assistant Governor Ron May.  Jefferson County is a small but active club and they are working with school system personnel to place students with disabilities in employment.  It was a treat to win the Louisville lottery which was a delicious cream cheese pound cake.  Food has certainly been the focal point of our visits!!!

On Wednesday evening, the officers from Augusta West treated Marsha and me to a wonderful dinner.  Past District Governor Dallas Simon and Pat joined us and we learned about the plans to host the GRSP Conclave.  The Augusta West Club is involved in many activities in the community and in developing countries.  President Frank Spears and his wife Genie are on their way to Nicaragua to provide eyeglasses to visually impaired persons.  The Augusta West Club welcomed eight new Paul Harris Fellows during my official visit.  The Augusta West Rotarians share their financial resources, time, and service in the Augusta community and throughout the district.  A special word of thanks goes to August West Member Ron Lewis for his coordination of the GRSP Conclave.  District 6920 was pleased to host 71 students from around the world, host families, and GRSP leadership and trustees from throughout Georgia.  The students were introduced after dinner at Augusta State University on Friday evening.  The weekend continued at the Augusta Marriott.  We were very proud to be associated with the sponsoring district.

Assistant Governor and District Membership Chair Lloyd Horadan is in Fort Lauderdale this weekend at the RI President’s Membership Seminar.  He and Assistant Governor Paula Goodnow will lead the membership efforts at the workshop in Dublin on October 27.  Thanks to these individuals, District 6920 is growing and retaining current members.

The District Governors in Zone 33 agreed to contribute $500 each to assist the victims of Hurricane Dean in the Caribbean.  In addition, the zone is providing shelter boxes, meals ready-to-eat, and fresh water in Haiti, Jamaica, and the Cayman Islands.  Fellow Governor Dick McCombe in Nassau is coordinating this effort on behalf of RI Director Barry Rassin.  If any of the clubs in the district wish to help the hurricane victims in the Caribbean, please contact me for directions.  You should also be aware that RI is active in helping the victims of the recent earthquake in Peru.  You should be pleased to know that District 6920 is “Sharing Rotary” where service is needed throughout the world.

Prior to Labor Day, we will make official visits to clubs in Warner Robins, Hazlehurst and Ashburn.  After Labor Day, we will visit Reidsville and the Dublin clubs.  I will probably save the next Weekly Communication until after the visit to Dublin.  My special thanks to everyone in the Augusta and Louisville areas for their warm hospitality and especially to AGs Joan Puryear and Ron May.

Dear Rotarian Friends,

Just prior to Labor Day weekend, we spent an enjoyable day in Warner Robins learning about the community and international service activities of Warner Robins Rotarians.  They are involved in an exciting international project in China which involves eye surgery.   The Warner Robins Rotary Club was successful in acquiring a grant to finance this project.  You will be happy to know that Assistant Governor Les Arent is recovering from his broken leg and is able to be out and about.  I appreciate his nice introduction to the Warner Robins club.  President Bill Pitts is providing outstanding leadership to the Warner Robins Rotarians and they expect approval of their candidate for an Ambassadorial Scholarship in the near future.  President Bill arranged for us to tour the impressive Museum of Aviation and we had dinner in Warner Robins before returning to Macon.

Saturday, September 8, is World Literacy Day.  There are many literacy projects in the district with children and adults.  Your public school system can be strengthened by Rotarians reading to students and donating books.  You may also wish to look into the literacy activities provided for adults in the statewide technical colleges.

The Hazlehurst Rotary Club is paying for Georgia Equivalency Diploma exams in Jeff Davis County.  This was done to honor the District Governor and I appreciate their thoughtfulness.  President Sharon Harper is planning a membership drive to strengthen the Hazlehurst Rotary Club.  We wish them every success in growing the membership and increasing their financial support of The Rotary Foundation.  If you are in Jeff Davis County on a Wednesday, stop by The Sisters’ Cabin to enjoy lunch with the Hazlehurst Rotary Club.

President Jerry Barker of the Ashburn Rotary Club was my host last Thursday at Shoney’s.  They were celebrating World Literacy Day early by contributing books to the preschool education program.  August 30 was also the 38th anniversary of the club.  They presented one Paul Harris Fellow Award to an outstanding member of their club.   Ashburn is a small but active Rotary organization and almost all of the members turned out for the District Governor’s visit.

After Labor Day weekend, Marsha and I visited the Reidsville Rotary Club in Tattnall County.  President Rob Murray is helping to reorganize the club and there is a membership drive planned for October.  A number of educators from the Tattnall County School System are members of this club, so they are active in education in Reidsville and Glennville.   Assistant Governor Laanga Gay was unable to be present, but Laanga is working with the organization to revitalize the membership.  I hope to be able to give you positive reports about the Reidsville Club later this year.

We had the pleasure of spending time with President Jep Craig, the officers and directors of the Dublin Rotary Club.  We arrived in Dublin Thursday afternoon and enjoyed a social event with the members at Palmetto Farms.  Dublin Rotary was the outstanding club of the year during 2006-2007 in District 6920.  They are active in the Laurens County community and are completing a grant application to assist a Catholic Charity orphanage in Rwanda.  They have completed a strategic plan which provides Rotary information, current committees, and action plans for service.  The Dublin Rotary Club plan is an outstanding document and provides direction for the organization from year to year.  They meet at the Dublin Country Club each Friday and you are welcome to have lunch with President Jep and his outstanding organization.  They support a GRSP student and hold a golf tournament each year to raise funds to support the GRSP.  A majority of their membership are Paul Harris Fellows and Past District Governors Preston Johnson and Billy Adams are still active in the club.  As a warning to all the Rotarians in the district who are interested in awards, the Dublin Club is already meeting some of the requirements and have chartered a bus to attend the District Conference in Macon.  They are truly a deserving organization and a dedicated group of individuals who live “Service Above Self”.

Next week we travel to Blackshear, Claxton, and Sylvania.  The Claxton Club is reading to students at the public library next Wednesday and asked us to come early and participate.  It is a unique experience to be active while visiting Rotary clubs.  There are many service events and social activities in which to be included.  I hope that each of you had a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend with friends and family.

Dear Rotarian Friends,

The District Governor missed the first board meeting of the tour in Blackshear.  The important Rotarians went to the bank conference room and the Governor went to the restaurant!  Assistant Governor Paul Elliott conducted the board meeting.  I was able to make up the board meeting by shortening my speech and meeting with the officers and directors after the regular meeting.  Blackshear has an active Rotary Club and they are involved in 26 separate activities in the community.  President Dr. Duane Robert is a local dentist who shares his time with Rotary to make the community better.

We arrived in Claxton at the Smith House Inn on Tuesday afternoon and President Alfie Cofield greeted us.  We enjoyed dinner with President Alfie and his wife, Marsha, and Past President Randy and his wife, Donna.  Wednesday morning I had great fun reading to a group of preschool students at the Evans County Library.  The Claxton Rotary Club made a donation of books for the Reading is Fundamental program for which I am grateful.  The opportunity made me feel like a real Rotarian being involved in literacy.  The Claxton Rotary Club is very active in the Evans county community, especially with the public and private schools.  They are active in each of the avenues of service and committed to increasing their numbers and providing more financial resources to The Rotary Foundation.  There were two Interact Clubs represented at the regular Rotary meeting.  Assistant Governor Laanga Gay introduced me and reminisced about her attending the Claxton Rotary Club 25 years ago as an Ambassadorial Scholar.  Marshall Smith is the President Elect and he and Alfie took us to dinner Wednesday evening in Vidalia.  The Claxton Rotary Club will be holding an auction on October 6 and hope to raise more than $20,000.  We certainly enjoyed our two-day visit to Claxton.

On Thursday, we visited the Sylvania Rotary Club and spent several hours with President Hobson Parker and the members of the club.  Assistant Don Gay, with help from Assistant Governor Laanga, introduced me to the members.  It took almost one whole hour for the board and officers to report on the activities of Rotary in Screven County.  Rotarian Mike Kile, the Sheriff of Screven County, sat next to me during the board meeting so I was on by best behavior.

Rotary really “leads the way” in Pierce, Evans, and Screven Counties.  Many of the leadership people in these communities are Rotarians and they contribute to the quality of life on a daily basis.

Please let me remind you that District Simplified Grants are due to Jean Iaderosa by October 1, 2007.  This program will provide $25,000 throughout the district.  Please be sure that your club’s program is included.  October 27 is the date for the Membership and Secretary’s Workshops in Dublin.  Please make every effort to be certain that your club is represented.  I am attending a planning meeting for the Presidents-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) in Macon today with representatives from District 6900 and 6910.  PETS will be held in Peachtree City on March 8-9, 2008.  DGE Kenan Kern and DGN Clyde Taylor are also on the committee.

Rotary International General Secretary Ed Futa has announced that John Kenny of the Rotary Club of Grangemouth, Central, Scotland has been nominated to be RI President in 2009-2010.  More information is available on the RI website.

Last Tuesday the Sandersville Rotary Club hosted the presentation ceremony of the new Rotaract Club of Sandersville Technical College.  Sandersville Technical College President and Rotarian Assistant Governor Lloyd Horadan welcomed Sandersville Rotary Club President Eric Holmes.  He presented the charter to Sandersville Technical College Rotaract President Kathy Aaron.  There are 19 charter members.  District 6920 welcomes the Sandersville Rotaract Club.  Thanks to Dr. Horadan, President Holmes, and Assistant Governor Ron May for their leadership in establishing Rotaract in Sandersville.

Next week we are going to Fitzgerald, Hawkinsville, and Milledgeville and to the auction/ fundraiser in Sandersville with AG Ron May.  I also plan to attend the board meeting of the Macon Rotary Club.  Please don’t forget that September is Youth Services Month, so include children and young people as you “Share Rotary”.

SPECIAL ATTENTION ASSISTANT GOVERNORS AND CURRENT PRESIDENTS:

The Presidents Elect Training Seminar (PETS) Planning Conference was held in Macon last Friday and Past District Governor Jeanette Caneega has planned an informative and interesting workshop for Presidents Elect and Nominee.  Registration will be available after October 1 on the website which is www.peachstatepets.org.  Please report the names of the Presidents Elect and Nominee to Paula Goodnow not later than mid-October.  The Assistant Governors will work with their club presidents to ensure that everyone registers and attends PETS.  DGE Kenan Kern will be in charge of the District 6920 sessions at the 2008 PETS.

The RI Council on Legislation has ruled that if an incoming president does not attend PETS, the current president will remain in that office.  That should be motivation for you current presidents to make sure that your President Elect is in Peachtree City on March 8-9, 2008.

We visited the Fitzgerald Rotary Club this week and enjoyed learning about their service activities.  President Scott Downing presented children’s books to the library reading program and I am grateful for that recognition.  The Fitzgerald Club inducted one new member and they are working hard to become and EREY club.  Thanks to the members of the Fitzgerald Rotary Club for their hospitality.

It was a pleasant experience to be with the Rotary Club of Hawkinsville and to “Share Rotary”.  There are 56 members of that club and they have requested that each member contribute $100 or more to The Rotary Foundation.  In fact, they made a nice contribution to The Rotary Foundation in my honor.  The members meet at The Steakhouse Restaurant in Hawkinsville and the food is the best in town!

Thursday found us at the Milledgeville Country Club for the board and regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Milledgeville.  President Karen Brooks provided written descriptions of the many activities in the avenues of service sponsored by Rotarians in the Baldwin County community.  They invite everyone to attend their annual auction on November 1 to raise funds for charitable organizations.  Milledgeville Rotary is an EREY club and they exceed the requirements for sustaining membership.  During my official visit, President Karen presented a contribution of almost $4,000 to the CART Fund.  This contribution will certainly add to the efforts of District CART Chair and Past District Governor Dallas Simon.  The Rotary Club is involved in a variety of literacy activities with the Baldwin County Schools and they are working with the Special Education Director to place disabled students in competitive employment.  Marsha and I visited the Peace Monument in Downtown Milledgeville.  It was the first Rotary Peace Monument erected in the United States.  Thanks to the Milledgeville Rotarians for their hospitality.

We spent Thursday evening at the Tennille Country Club for the Rotary Club of Sandersville’s annual auction.  This is a once-a-year fundraiser and good fellowship for President Eric Holmes and the Sandersville Rotarians.  Assistant Governor Ron May is a member of this club and was part of the leadership for the auction.  Dinner was a low country boil and the food was delicious.  We enjoyed the evening of fun, fellowship, and food!

Presidents Elect, please complete the early registration for PETS and encourage the club’s Presidents Nominee to attend with you.  Also, be looking for registration for the October 27 Secretary’s and Membership Workshops to be held at Heart of Georgia Technical College in Dublin.  Please don’t miss these opportunities to learn more about Rotary leadership and club management.

We are spending next week in Statesboro, Tennille, Wrightsville, and Jesup.  On Friday, Past District Governor Bill Blankenship, District Governor Elect Kenan Kern, Group Study Exchange Chair Gordon Matthews, and I will interview candidates for outgoing team leader to the South of France.  There are plenty of fellowship opportunities, service to others, and a variety of activities going on in District 6920.

Dear Rotarian Friends,

Please plan to attend the Membership/Secretary Workshops on Saturday, October 27 at the Heart of Georgia Technical College in Dublin.  This is an important event for presidents, leadership Rotarians, membership chairs, secretaries, and bulletin editors.  This will be an opportunity to develop membership recruitment and retention strategies and to utilize an electronic format for general Rotary business.  Assistant Governors Paula Goodnow and Lloyd Horadan will lead the Membership Workshop and North Carolina Past District Governor Mike Thacker will be the “Rotary Professor” for the Secretary’s Workshop.  We expect representatives from each club and lunch will be served.  Registration information will be sent to you next week.  Assistant Governors . . . please encourage participation from each of your clubs by contacting the presidents by telephone.  The district leadership is depending upon AGs to ensure a good turnout.

Last Monday was spent with the Rotary Club of Statesboro which is an outstanding organization.  Their board meeting was filled with reports on service activities and upcoming events.  They are well organized, dedicated to the ideals of Rotary, and an example of the spirit of Rotary.  President Bryan Burke was my host and AGs Laanga and Don Gay introduced me to a room full of high performing members.  Three new members were inducted and membership was emphasized to the club.  Georgia Southern University is important in the Statesboro community and we agonized over the recent overtime loss to Chattanooga.  The Rotarians gave me a football autographed by GSU Coach Chris Hatcher, who is from Macon.

The Tennille Rotarians are a small but active group and they meet in a log cabin constructed in 1922.  It is a unique meeting location.  President Mike McDonald provides good leadership and AG Ron May was present to greet us.  They are an EREY club and proud of their identity in Washington County.  Thanks to Mike and the Tennille Rotarians for a rewarding official visit.

The Wrightsville Rotary Club hosted a dinner on Tuesday night for the area Rotarians in a wonderful Italian villa in Washington County!  WE had an opportunity to watch the full moon rise over the cattle in the field and to share fun and fellowship with a group of service-minded Georgia Rotarians.  Nana’s Kitchen on the Square was the site for the board meeting and the official visit.  Wrightsville has an impressive group of Rotarians and Past District Governor Jeanette Caneega is an active member of this club.  President Susie Hall is currently in charge and they recognized the Student and Teacher of the Month for September from the Johnson County Schools.  I am impressed with their service activities, especially literacy.  Sandersville Technical College President and Assistant Governor Lloyd Horadan introduced us.  We had a very enjoyable time in Johnson and Washington Counties.

I spent last Thursday with President Bill Harvey and the members of the Rotary Club of Jesup.  We had a good board meeting and I learned of the many activities in which Rotarians are involved in the Wayne County area.  Jesup is an EREY club and they have already met the membership increase for the year.  They are giving special attention to the retention plan in regard to membership.  They have also placed one disabled student in part-time employment and are working with the Wayne County Schools on a variety of literacy activities.  They meet at noon on Thursdays at Sybil’s Restaurant on Highway 301 and I encourage Rotarians who are in the area to join this active group.

On Friday I met with Group Study Exchange Chair Gordon Matthews, DGE Kenan Kern, and Past District Governor Bill Blankenship to select the outbound team leader for the trip to France next Spring.  Assistant Governor John Ricks of Cochran has been selected as the leader for the GSE Team which will go to District 1760 in the South of France in 2008.  Six Rotarians were considered for this opportunity.  The committee led by John Ricks is now seeking applications from non-Rotarians ages 25-40 who are not related to Rotarians to accompany John to France.  Applications may be downloaded from the RI website and should be mailed to John Ricks at 201 Beach Street, Cochran, GA  31014.  You may also communicate with John at jricks39@yahoo.com

Assistant Governors and Presidents:

Please appoint a GSE representative from your club and send the name of that individual with contact information to John Ricks before October 5, 2007.  This individual will assist in the recruiting of non-Rotarian candidates and assist in the coordination of the District 1760 group when they visit Georgia next year.  Please take a minute from your busy schedule to provide this information next week.

For your information, the first day of October is Monday and in the Rotary World it is Vocations Month.  Thanks for the leadership each of you provide in your clubs and throughout the district.  We have made official visits to forty clubs.  The weekly communications have been well received and this has proven to be a good way to provide information.  The Governor’s Newsletter will be coming out next week.  Marsha and I are on our way to Myrtle Beach, SC for the Zone Meeting through October 7.  The next weekly communication will come to you around October 16.

Rotary International    Richard E. Hyer, Jr.
        District 6920 Governor    2007-2008

Dear Rotarian Friends,

The Zones 33 & 34 meeting in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was very informative and we heard from RI President Elect D.K. Lee, who is from Korea.  RI Director Barry Rassin introduced PE Lee on several occasions and his remarks were both encouraging and educational.  It was also good to share experiences with the District Governors throughout the Southeastern United States and the Caribbean.  There is only one district in Zones 33 & 34 with more than 65 clubs which is the number in District 6920.  You will be interested to know that our zone stacks up really well in regard to service and giving to The Rotary Foundation in comparison to the rest of the world.  It will be interesting to see how much membership increases throughout our area.  There is a significant push throughout RI to recruit and retain members.  The District 6920 leadership hopes to give you some idea of the membership status for the first quarter of the 2007 year at the conference in Dublin on October 27.

We spent the Columbus holiday and a few more days in the North Georgia mountains where the weather and the scenery were absolutely beautiful.  I am spending Monday and Tuesday of this week with my home club in Macon for the regular meeting on Monday, a board meeting on Tuesday, and the annual Past Presidents’ Recognition Dinner on Tuesday evening.  We changed the schedule a bit this week and will visit the Richmond Hill Rotary Club on Thursday.  President Robbie King tells me that membership in the Richmond Hill Club has increased by 20% since July 1.  I am anxious to visit with them and learn about what is going on in this important Savannah bedroom community.  The week of October 22, Marsha and I will travel to the Brunswick-St. Simon’s area for three club visits.  We will be guests of District Governor Nominee Clyde Taylor and Sue.  Our Rotary experiences have been built upon service and friendship.  Staying in the homes of fellow Rotarians has broadened our friendships and been a unique way to learn about Rotary clubs and the activities of individual Rotarians.  Past District Governors tell me that DGN Clyde has provided a special fishing trip for them and I am looking forward to my turn at salt water angling.  North Carolina Past District Governor Mike Thacker and Connie arrive in Macon on October 26 as our guests.  PDG Mike will lead the workshop Saturday which will make all of us in District 6920 experts on the club and district database (DaCdb).  We certainly appreciate Mike’s willingness to be of service to our district.  He is a technology specialist by vocation, but is only charging us expenses for his one-day seminar.  I enjoyed his presentation on the DaCdb at the Zone Conference.  District Governor Elect Kenan Kern and I remarked about how efficient the District leadership can be if all the Rotarians in our district were on the database.  We could send the DG’s newsletter directly; manage attendance and club business through the 65 secretaries/administrators of clubs; and could communicate goals, objective, news, and general business with the click of one button!  It will be a top priority for our district to be “electronic” by the end of the year.  Mike Thacker’s visit will be the first avenue to that goal.

Past District Governor Albert Reichert and Bebe and Marsha and I met for dinner last week to get the ball rolling for the District Conference in Macon in April.  Albert is holding a preliminary planning meeting with representatives of the eight clubs in the Macon area.  These representatives will serve as an advisory board and hopefully their clubs will serve as local hosts and hostesses.  Albert will be contacting club presidents very soon to appoint chairs and committees to make the 2008 conference the best ever.  We need a strong turnout to provide some profit to replenish the district treasury.  Please allow me this opportunity to encourage you to participate and support Albert and Bebe.

As District Governor, I am often asked by club presidents and their board members to “Tell us how to be a good club and how to meet the district and RI goals?”  My response is usually to encourage them to focus all of their activities around service and friendship.  For me, those seem to be the two primary ingredients for outstanding Rotarians.  I would like to offer the following list, which hopefully will summarize some additional ingredients for an outstanding club in 2007-2008.

1.      Encourage every Rotarian to be a sustaining member and your club will have the EREY distinction.

2.      Successful clubs are billing their members quarterly, rather than asking for a one-time contribution.

3.      Treasurers send The Rotary Foundation contribution quarterly and before June 15 each year so as to reflect proper accounting.

4.      Recruit and retain members and grow the size of your club.

5.      Get on the DaCdb and keep it current.

6.      Send your President Elect to the Presidents Elect Training Seminar and develop an organizational chart which describes to the members their responsibilities for the coming year.

7.      Distribute a hard copy of the Governor’s newsletter each month.

8.      Develop and maintain a website.

9.      Appoint representatives when requested by the DG who will tackle issues as these develop throughout the year.

10.    Follow steps 1-9.

I know this is not an all-inclusive list, but perhaps these action steps can be helpful in improving club operations.  It is my opinion that each club throughout District 6920 is owned and operated by its Rotarian members.  The Governor and district leadership can provide opportunities and encourage clubs to meet Rotary goals, but the clubs will only be as good as the members want them to be.

There are 24 clubs remaining for me to visit and I look forward to meeting with the leadership and members of those organizations.  After visiting over 40 clubs, I am beginning to feel confident that the district leadership is providing opportunities to make Rotary the most important and effective service organization in our communities.

Yours for Better Rotary Service,
Richard E. Hyer, Jr.                                                                                                wc #13

       District 6920 Governor   2007-2008

Dear Rotarian Friends,

There were a lot of nice e-mails after the last Weekly Communication.  Thanks for being interested in Rotary activities throughout District 6920.  There seems to be a lot of interest in the conference coming up in April.  Several of the district leadership chairs have volunteered to assist in coordinating activities.  The main objective is to encourage club members to attend the conference.  We are doing everything possible to hold down the costs and we need your participation to replenish the district treasury.  Past District Governor Albert has committed to providing ten home stays for new Rotarians so that the cost would be manageable for their first conference.

I also received some positive comments on the ten action steps listed last week.  In summary, the action steps deal with contributions to The Rotary Foundation, increasing membership, timely reporting, and electronic management.  There is a lot of effort involved in encouraging club leaders to follow these recommendations.

There has also been some discussion about awards when I have met with the individual club members.  Many clubs are interested in being recognized for their good works and the conference will be the place for these distinctions.  “We are known by our achievements” certainly rings true with Rotarians.  Please encourage public relations efforts in your communities so that people will know that Rotary is the largest service organization in the world.

Marsha and I recently visited the Richmond Hill Rotary Club and participated in the induction of new members.  Richmond Hill has increased membership since July 1 by 23%.  President Robbie King is certainly to be commended for his leadership.  Growing the size of a club is a real challenge.  They now have 53 members and seem to have completed their rebuilding period.  They are embarking on a water well project in Nigeria and plan to complete a grant in the near future.  The members are involved in a variety of literacy projects and hold a dinner once a month as a social event.  It was fun interacting with this enthusiastic group of Rotarians.

Grants Chair Bob Ashley is relocating to Colorado in the next month or so.  Bob is the founder of the Medical Equipment Transport Service (METS) program and has served as Grants Chair for District 6920 for several years.  He has been very helpful in seeking approval for grants for Rotarians throughout the district.  We owe a great debt of gratitude to Dr. Bob Ashley for his commitment and dedication not only to grants but in seeing that the Grants program in our district was successful.  We wish Bob every success as he extends his retirement years in Colorado.  Past District Governor Lyn Hadwin has agreed to serve as Grants Chair.  Lyn lives in Savannah where he is involved in a family real estate business.  He is a very active Rotarian and recently participated in the Zone Institute in Myrtle Beach.  Lyn will take over duties immediately and his contact information is as follows:

Lyn Hadwin, PO Box 22303, Savannah, GA  31403
H (912) 236-2705    W (912) 927-6145     Email:  lhadwin@earthlink.net

All of us in District 6920 express our appreciation to Lyn for assuming this very important district responsibility.  Please correct this information in your 2007-2008 District Directory.

We are traveling to the Brunswick/ St. Simons area next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and look forward to being guests of DGN Clyde and Sue Taylor.  If you haven’t already done so, please register for the Membership/Secretary’s Workshops in Dublin on Saturday, October 27.  It promises to be an informative Rotary event.

Dear Rotarian Friends,

The Group Study Exchange (GSE) is an important event in the Rotary year.  Dr. John Ricks from the Cochran Rotary Club is serving as the Outbound Team Chair.  There is a change in timing for the visit which is advantageous to our district.  The French group study team will come to Georgia approximately April 8 for one month.  They will now be able to attend our district conference.  The Georgia group will go to the South of France around May 8 for one month.  Thanks to district GSE Chair Gordon Matthews for his organizational efforts.  We are recruiting non-Rotarians between the ages of 25-40 to accompany John on this wonderful European adventure to France.  Please communicate directly with John Ricks to refer individuals for consideration.  The deadline is mid-November.

The committee to select the representative for our district to the Council on Legislation met this week.  The members are DGE Kenan Kern, DGN Clyde Taylor, and me.  Past District Governor Albert Reichert, Jr. was nominated as the representative and Past District Governor Jim Puryear was nominated as the alternate.  This is subject to confirmation at the district conference in April, 2008.

This week we had the pleasure of visiting three clubs in the Brunswick-St. Simons area.  Marsha and I spent Tuesday lunch and dinner with President Jim Bruce of the St. Simons Island Club.  Jim has the great fortune to be president of a well-established organization with outstanding Rotarians.  The St. Simons Island Rotary Club is second in overall giving to The Rotary Foundation since Rotary was established in Georgia.  They also provide $27,000 in scholarships to Glynn County residents who are attending college.  They sponsor a variety of community service projects and they recently donated a flag and flagpole to the new St. Simons Island elementary school.  Past District Governors Pat Donahoo and John Parkins are members of this club.  District Governor Nominee Clyde Taylor and Assistant Governor Pat Storino are also members.  I had the pleasure of presenting twelve Paul Harris Awards and two in absentia.  Three of the recipients were from the Sanders Family and represented grandfather, father, and son.  It was a unique experience to be involved in this special presentation.  Thanks to the members of the St. Simons Island Rotary Club for their hospitality and dedication to service to others.

On Wednesday morning we were hosted by the Glynn County Rotary Club at Christie’s restaurant for breakfast.  Past President Emily Griggs was substituting for President Jeff Jones who was away on business. This is a small but active club and they presented the Cruise Raffle winner which is one of their fundraisers.  Two lucky individuals will be enjoying a cruise out of Jacksonville to the Bahamas.

On Thursday morning we had breakfast at Epworth by the Sea with the Marshes of Glynn Rotary Club.  President Jim Turner and Secretary Dr. Sharon Bolin were our hosts.  We were able to participate in the presentation of a Paul Harris Award to Ray Worthington who is the retired headmaster of Frederica Academy.  The Marshes of Glynn Club has a partnership with the Glynn County School System which is known as Children in Crisis.  They provide a variety of services to families and students in one elementary school in Brunswick.  They hope to expand this program with a district simplified grant.  They are making every effort to increase their membership so contact President Jim if you have friends who wish to be Rotarians in the Brunswick-St. Simons Island area.  Reverend Charles Small is a member of this club and serves as superintendent at Epworth by the Sea.  It is a lovely place to meet on an early fall morning.

We are expecting Connie and Mike Thacker in Macon in preparation for the District Membership-Secretary’s Conference in Dublin this Saturday.  I certainly hope members from your club have made plans to attend.  I’ll give you a report of the conference next week.

Please make a special effort to refer eligible candidates for the GSE trip to France to John Ricks whose contact information is:

Marsha and I will be staying home this week while I make my official visit to the Macon Rotary Club and then to Cochran, Byron and Sandersville.  Our special thanks to the Taylors on St. Simons Island for allowing us to be their pampered houseguests this week.  Sue and Clyde are wonderful people and we look forward to Clyde’s role as District Governor in the future.A brief word of encouragement . . .                                    November 2, 2007

Rotary International    Richard E. Hyer, Jr.
     District 6920 Governor   2007-2008

Dear Rotarian Friends,

The district governor started the week by making an official visit to the Macon Rotary Club.  Since I am a member of this club it was an anxiety-producing experience.  I worried all weekend about saying the wrong thing in front of my friends and even worried that a lot of members wouldn’t even come to the meeting.  Thank goodness there was a large crowd and they responded well to my encouragement and most of my jokes.  It isn’t easy to stand in front of 150 people who you know very well and explain the Rotary story.

The Macon club is an outstanding organization and has been an EREY club for a number of years.  They are already 40% on the way to becoming an EREY club for 2008.  They are honoring veterans on November 11 at Rotary Park in partnership with the Boy Scouts of America.  The club is involved with literacy and last year provided books to a school in Liberia and funded improvements for an orphanage in Haiti.  They are busy in the community and around the world.  President Ron Williams donated a Language Master to the Georgia Academy for the Blind in my honor.  Thanks to Harold Weathers for a nice introduction and to the board of director and members for their warm hospitality.

Please remember to make recommendations for individuals to serve as district governor in 2010-2011.  The candidates must have served as club president and be willing to commit to Rotary leadership during the next three years.  We also need recommendations for non-Rotarians ages 25-40 to serve as Rotary ambassadors for the Group Study Exchange to France in May.  The contact information should be sent directly to Dr. John Ricks who will be the outbound leader for the 2008 Group Study Exchange team from District 6920.

The Membership/Secretary’s workshop in Dublin last Saturday was attended by approximately 60 Rotarians.  Twenty five persons participated in the workshop with PDG Mike Thacker on the Club and District Database system.  There were very positive comments about the value of the leadership and it is hoped that all 65 clubs in the district will be on the Club and District Database by the end of the year.  The Membership workshop was also a good experience and the attendees were advised how to recruit and retain Rotary members.  Thanks to Workshop Coordinator and Assistant Governor Lloyd Horadan for administering and implementing the activities.  Paula Goodnow was the Co-Chair and AG Ron May and Bill Booth made presentations.  My special thanks to each presenter for helping us to further our Rotary education.  There are tentative plans to schedule another Club and District Database workshop in the spring to give new presidents, secretaries, and treasurers an opportunity to learn the system.

President Ross Faircloth was our host at the Cochran Rotary Club last Tuesday.  AG Dr. John Ricks provided a nice introduction.  The club inducted a new member and I was grateful to have a part in the ceremony.  Growing a club’s membership should be one of the top priorities of the District 6920 administration.  We were also pleased to meet Dr. and Mrs. Rolf Meyerhofen who are the parents of a former GRSP student from 14 years ago.  Their son attended Georgia Tech and Dr. Meyerhofen is a Rotarian and a native of Munich in Bavaria Germany.  They expressed their appreciation for their son’s opportunity to study in Georgia.  The Cochran club recognized me with a contribution to the Communities in Schools project which is a part of their literacy efforts.  I enjoyed meeting President Ross and the Cochran Rotarians.

I enjoyed breakfast with President Leon Collins and the members of the Byron Rotary Club.  They provided a Halloween motif at Jan’s Kuntry Villa restaurant for the holiday.  They are making every effort to be an EREY club and to recruit new members.  The official name of the former Greater Byron Rotary Club is now the Byron Rotary Club.

Yesterday we met with the Sandersville Rotary Club at the Twin City Country Club.  This is a group of Rotarians who enjoy their own fellowship and accomplish a great deal in the community.  President Eric Holmes was our host along with the president of the Rotaract Club from Sandersville Technical College.  There are two Rotary Clubs in Washington County, the Tennille and Sandersville clubs.  They have a cooperative relationship and maintain their individual identities.  Marsha and I attended the annual Sandersville Rotary Club auction several weeks ago when $9,000 was raised for charitable organizations.  They have given dictionaries to every third grade student in the county.  All Sandersville Rotarians are sustaining members, which makes them an EREY club.  I am certain that AG and Past President Ron May is a motivating force behind the good works accomplished by this club.  Lloyd Horadan is also a member and was instrumental in starting the Rotaract Club at the technical college.  Not much goes on in Sandersville without Rotarians having a leadership role.  This may be a rural part of Georgia but it is a first class service organization.

Marsha and I travel to Swainsboro, McIntosh County, and Jekyll Island next week.  We look forward to being hosted by the presidents of these clubs and learning about community and world service.  Thanks to all of you who have supported our Rotary District 6920 journey and made us welcome in your community.

Yours for Better Rotary Service,
Richard E. Hyer, Jr.                                                                                                wc #16
