2008
Conclave
Americus, Georgia
August 22-24, 2008

Welcome to Americus
and Sumter County...

Due South of Atlanta is Americus, Georgia. Americus, founded in 1832, was once one of the largest cities in Georgia. The rail line connecting Savannah to Montgomery ran through Americus. This rail line has been revitalized with the SAM Shortline Excursion Train.
The Windsor Hotel is one of the city¹s most famous attractions with its Victorian splendor. The hotel was built in 1892 for the main purpose of ³catching² tourists on their way to Florida.
Few people realize that the non-profit organization Habitat for Humanity has its roots in Americus. The Global Village and Discovery Center is open to visitors curious about the history of Habitat for Humanity and the types of homes the organization builds around the world.
The Historic Rylander Theater is also a site to see! Originally opened in 1921, the theater has been renovated for the patrons of the present to enjoy. Visitors can take in a touring show while enjoying the latest technology in an old-time vaudeville setting.
The Andersonville Civil War Village and the Andersonville National Historic Site, home to the National Prisoner of War Museum, are just 10 miles north of Americus. Every year in the fall, the Village of Andersonville hosts a historic fair with battle reenactments.
Jimmy Carter left his boyhood home of Archery to become the 39th president.   The Jimmy Carter National Historic Site is just 10 miles away in Plains, Georgia. His former high school has been converted into a museum and his campaign headquarters a train depot is still there. Carter¹s boyhood farm is open for tours and visitors may even attend a Sunday school lesson taught by the former president!

Conclave
Events

Conclave events are planned at several locations throughout Americus.  The atmosphere you experience on the plains of Southwest Georgia will inspire you throughout the weekend.
Lodging at the Historic Windsor Hotel offers spacious rooms and will be at the hub of activity for Saturday evening.  Located in the heart of Downtown Americus, southern hospitality will surround you with shopping, eateries, and beautiful turn of the century architecture.
The Conclave begins with a Trustees meeting on Friday.  Students first register at the Student Success Center on the campus of Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW).  Here they will meet their host families for the weekend.  All Rotarians are encouraged to join students on Friday evening for a “formal” welcome and buffet dinner catered at Convocation Hall (the Storm Dome) of GSW.  As the name implies excitement will be in the air.
Saturday meetings will be held in the conference rooms of the GSW Student Success Center.  Student meetings cover a variety of topics such as local laws, customs, and courtesies.  After lunch served on campus, students spend the afternoon assembling and rehearsing their entertainment for the evening.  Students, host families, and Rotarians gather Saturday evening at Windsor Hotel Grand Dining Room for a meal that is sure to please all!  After dinner, the show will begin at the historic Rylander Theatre, conveniently located two blocks from the Hotel.  The highlight of the evening is uplifting entertainment by the students in their traditional/native dress.
Sunday morning, the students will meet their rides back home at 9:00 a.m. and begin the exciting year ahead as a GRSP student!

What is a Conclave?

The Georgia Rotary Student Program (GRSP) allows students and Rotarians the opportunity to meet and learn about one another as they begin an exciting year.  Roughly 70 students from 30 countries will attend Conclave 2008 on the weekend of August 22-24.
The Conclave represents a great opportunity to extend friendship to our GRSP students and enjoy a weekend of fellowship with other Rotarians.  A mandatory meeting for all GRSP students for the 2008-2009 school year, Conclave allows students to meet fellow members of their class, be indoctrinated to GRSP, life in the United States, and understand what is expected of them during their stay.
