A message to club presidents from the North American Area Literacy Resource Group |
Dear Club Presidents Elect, Assistant Governors, and District 6920
leadership,
What a pleasure it will be to serve as District 6920 Chairman of Literacy this
year. I am committed to the program that DGE Dallas
Simon has shared with us from the Rotary International leadership. Please see
the attachment for the important initiatives related to literacy.

Dear Rotary President:
As you are probably aware, Rotary International and District Governor Dallas Simon are promoting literacy very strongly during your year as president. Your support of this effort is greatly needed.
Literacy is a much greater problem in our state and throughout the world than most of us had ever thought. It shocked me to lean that 46% of adults in the US function at or below the fourth grade literacy level. If this rate worsens we could have our political leaders elected by people who are functionally illiterate. THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT WE ROTARIANS CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT.
Our district goals for literacy promotion for the following year are as follows:
1. Each club will create or participate in a project in your
community to help eradicate illiteracy. News will be provided soon about
an exciting new project sponsored by one of our clubs
2. District 6920 will participate in a project as a whole. The
Dictionary Project in the enclosed brochure is recommended.
3. Monthly literacy themes will be promoted each month in each club
4. Literacy will be promoted in the district newsletter, emails, and
mailings
Enclosed is the following information which hopefully will be of assistance to you and your club literacy chair as you serve this year:
1. A message to club presidents from the North American Area Literacy
Resource Group
2. A sample club program for Literacy Day—September 8, 2006
3. Announcements to be made to your club in the month of August
4. A brochure for the Dictionary Project suggested for the District
Project
Please contact me or District Governor Dallas Simon if we may be of
assistance. In Rotary service,
Joan C Puryear
District Literacy Chair
