2008-09 District Simplified Grants

The District Simplified Grants Committee reviewed club proposals and awarded a total of $25,000 to the following club projects:

• RC of St. Simons Island - Provide development to science initiative programs encompassing coastal and marine topics for grades K-5.

• RC of Eastman - Provide books year round for new library and computers for technology center at Boys and Girls Club.

• RC of McRae - Provide books for birth–5 year old youth with the Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy. Provide training materials for Youth Leadership Academy for high school students.

• RC of Hazlehurst - Provide support for students who participate in community Special Olympics. During holiday season provide food and gifts for Special Olympic student.

• RC of August South - Provide funds for distribution of dictionaries and Rotary coloring books to "at risk" students.

• RC of Savannah West - Provide literacy program support for 100 homeless and low income children. Books will be provided for classrooms and for children to take home.

• RC of Valdosta - Provide books for elementary school focusing on literacy improvements for underprivileged population.

• RC of Hawkinsville - Provide funds for CPR/AED training and to purchase defibrillators for use in the high school and Recreation Department.

• RC of Camden & Kings Bay - Provide school rulers to kindergarten age youth with "4 Way Test" printed one side and "Golden Rule" printed on opposite side.

• RC of Macon - Provide funding to distribute dictionaries to every 5th grade student in Bibb County. The 4 Way Test will be attached inside the dictionary.

• RC of Savannah Sunrise - Funding for nutritious foods to neighborhood centers during weekends and non-school periods. Arts and crafts materials provided during after-school periods.

• RC of Reidsville - Provide early reading opportunities for 100 underprivileged children by use of Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy.

• RC of Warner Robins - Distribute dictionaries to 3rd grade students in 27 public school and one private school. Over 2,000 dictionaries will be distributed by Rotarians.

• RC of Sandersville - Provide materials to construct 4 wheelchair ramps at community center and residences. Team with Ferst Foundation to continue development of community literacy program.

• RC of Skidaway Island - Provide computer equipment for an "off campus" Technology Center in low income housing area.

• RC of Centerville - Provide nutritious food in local food subsidized program for low income families.

• RC of Pooler - Provide funds to support literacy initiative (Reading Makes Cents) program. Books will be provided to elementary school media centers to promote student enthusiasm for reading.

Twenty Rotary clubs requested DSG funding in excess of $52,300. Unfortunately, the District is allocated only $25,000 for the year. Thanks to everyone for your interests, time and dedication to helping our home communities with special needs.
